In readiness for Hull being City of Culture in 2017 the redundant Fruit Market quarter was regenerated as part of a transformational project to regenerate the area back into beneficial use for the local community. The historic and characterful buildings that line Humber Street were sensitively restored, providing new spaces for galleries, artist studios, independent restaurants and shops.

At the heart of Humber Street was ‘Fruit’ an iconic independent music venue housed in an old fruit ripening warehouse. As part of the regeneration the venue was extended at the rear to increase its capacity. The acoustically sealed extension was a faceted timber clad ‘jewel’ whose form was informed by the steeply pitched roof of the listed smoke house adjacent. This unique structure provides a sympathetic modern addition to the conservation area. The sides of the extension wrap up to form a generous parapet, framing a first floor roof terrace. ‘Fruit’ has now been converted into the new venue ‘Social’ and in addition to the ground floor music venue is a new gallery and independent shop ‘form’.

“Working with the ID team has been a really positive, creative and successful process.”

The redundant first floor was converted into a series of flexible art studios for artists and novices to affordably hire space and equipment to encourage the arts within the local community. ‘Juice Studios’ has become a hub for independent artists and its shared working area to the rear has a vaulted space with high level north facing rooflights which creates an airy, open-plan studio that opens out onto the generous and private roof terrace. ‘Label Works’ a record label is located on the top floor. Fitted with an open-plan co-working area, recording studios, a listening room and offices. The space embraces the historical character and quirkiness of the building creating a vibrant work space within the heart of the Fruit Market.
