THE PONTOON

Docks Beers is a thriving micro brewery in Grimsby, featuring a tap room and music venue alongside its King Edward Street brewing facility. ID Architecture conducted a feasibility study exploring expansion into the former grade II listed Castle Press building on the River Freshney, aiming to create a mixed use waterfront venue. Built in 1891 for the 1st Lincolnshire Volunteer Position Artillery, the building became Albert Gait Printers in the 1930s. Extensions added include flat and saw toothed roof structures with metal framed windows, and a large steel-framed warehouse added in the 1990s. The listed section facing Victoria Street North would form the new venue’s entrance, offering flexible workspace with rentable desks for young professionals in a vibrant setting. The former printing hall would become a food court hosting street food vendor by day and transforming into a performance venue by night.

“Working with ID was a thoroughly rewarding experience. James Lockwood brought creative vision in spades, along with a deep understanding of the brief and the context. Even at the feasibility stage, their proposals were imaginative, well-considered, and aligned perfectly with our ambitions for the site. Their professionalism and insight made a complex project feel full of possibility.”

Will Douglas – Director, Docks Beers

A new brewery wraps around the food hall, featuring a tank hall, service area, and chilling room, ending in a waterfront taproom and distillery.

These light filled spaces under saw tooth roofs extend to a waterfront area with a boat tour kiosk, tasting room, terrace, and west facing jetty.

The adjacent warehouse would be stripped to its frame, forming the structure for an outdoor performance space for cultural events.

Lighting rigs, art, and sculpture could hang from the frame. Removing the warehouse enables a link to Victoria Mills and a new waterfront plaza with a pedestrian route into town.
