ID Architecture were appointed to design the new headquarters for JemBuild, a Grimsby based contractor that wanted to create a striking office building in the heart of Humberston’s commercial area on Wilton Road. The brief was to provide first floor offices for JemBuild and a ground floor lettable office, meeting room, and entrance lobby. The simple four-bay design featured a striking saw tooth roof that filled the first floor spaces with natural light. Each bay benefits from a vaulted ceiling, including the entrance foyer. To reinforce the entrance, the central bay projects forward at first floor, framing the entrance beneath and creating a porch with recessed lighting. Upon entering, the vaulted double height space features a window at first floor with faceted plaster reveals, reinforcing the sharp angles of the building’s exterior.

At ground floor, the meeting room is separated from the foyer with a glazed partition, also benefiting from sliding doors opening onto a private landscaped garden. The ground floor office unit spans the full depth of the building, creating a large open plan office with views front and rear.
ID Architecture were appointed to design the interior, featuring a dividing wall to separate the working area and meeting space, creating storage on one side and a postcard display on the other.
The end wall provides storage, discreetly hidden by full height walnut veneer panels, introducing a natural texture. A new bespoke desk, constructed from Corian, provides a working space for eight people with discreet storage beneath.
Externally, the entire structure is wrapped in black-painted timber cladding, including walls and roof, softened by considered planting around its perimeter. Following completion, the project was shortlisted for two awards – an RIBA East Midlands award and an LABC Building Excellence award, which was won in 2017.
