Over the past two decades, John Leggott College (JLC) in Scunthorpe has undergone several building projects to accommodate growing student numbers and an expanding curriculum. However, this led to a disjointed collection of architectural styles, with little cohesion. The original three-storey brick building facing West, housing classrooms, was the campus’s most prominent feature. Due to its position and unimpeded views, it was often regarded as unattractive and a blight on the area.

To streamline the campus layout and provide additional classroom space, a review of the college’s master plan was conducted.

The land directly in front of the existing building was identified for expansion, providing an opportunity to meet two objectives: adding more accommodation and improving the campus’s frontage.

ID Architecture was appointed as the design architect, responsible for the initial design and technical package for the tender process. The solution involved a new three-storey classroom block placed directly in front of the original building, acting as a screen. A glazed link corridor connected the two, allowing for more efficient use of space by re purposing the original circulation cores.

The south-facing façade was carefully considered to balance a glazed frontage for curb appeal with solar control. The glazing was treated to limit heat gain, and vertical fins were added for shading. The remainder of the façade was rendered white to match the adjacent entrance building, creating visual cohesion.

Pink Trespa cladding highlighted the rooftop plant and substation, incorporating the college’s corporate colours. Completed in 2023 by Lindum Group and Evans McDowall Architects, the project successfully created a welcoming and cohesive campus frontage.
